Previous Talk

A Heritage Walk St. Mary's Island to The Watch House.

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 6th March 2024.

The Presentation this week was by Mr Alan Hilldrew who has given us several presentations over the lasy 10 years.

Alan started his show from Seaton Sluice talking about how the Delaval family made their money in coal and Salt but they didn’t have access to the sea so they cut a path through the rocks and cliff (a Sluice) into the North Sea this gave them good access to transport their coal and salt making the family very wealthy.

He then virtually walked along the head land to St Mary’s Light House which has a colony of seals who have housed themselves there. Continuing along the head land pointing out structures that have been modified/removed over the years, threw Whitley Bay and on to Cullercoats which houses

the Watch House which used to be a Fisherman’s Lookout built in 1879 to house the Volunteer Life Brigade. Alan continued his virtual trek further to Tynemouth Priory and Castle. During his talk he would tell stories about a land mark, building, park as to what used to be there or about the changes that had happened

This was a delightful morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed this presentation.

Questions followed on several points to conclude the presentation.
